Nonperturbative Effects from the Resummation of Perturbation Theory

چکیده
Using the general argument in Borel resummation of perturbation theory that links the divergent perturbation theory to the nonperturbative effect we argue that the nonperturbative effect associated with the perturbation theory should have a branch cut along the positive real axis in the complex coupling plane. The component in the weak coupling expansion of the nonperturbative amplitude, which usually includes the leading term in the weak coupling expansion, that gives rise to the branch cut can be calculated in principle from the perturbation theory combined with some exactly calculable properties of the nonperturbative effect. Realization of this mechanism is demonstrated in the double well potential and the two-dimensional O(N) nonlinear sigma model. In these models the leading term in weak coupling of the nonperturbative effect can be obtained with good accuracy from the first terms of the perturbation theory. Applying this mechanism to the infrared renormalon induced nonperturbative effect in QCD, we suggest some of the QCD condensate effects can be calculated in principle from the perturbation theory.

Generalizing Starobinskĭı’s Formalism to Yukawa Theory & to Scalar QED
During inflation quantum effects from massless, minimally coupled scalars and gravitons can be strengthened so much that perturbation theory breaks down. To follow the subsequent evolution one must employ a nonperturbative resummation. Starobinskĭı has developed such a technique for simple scalar theories. I discuss recent progress in applying this technique to more complicated models.
متن کاملNonperturbative effects and nonperturbative definitions in matrix models and topological strings
We develop techniques to compute multi-instanton corrections to the 1/N expansion in matrix models described by orthogonal polynomials. These techniques are based on finding trans-series solutions, i.e. formal solutions with exponentially small corrections, to the recursion relations characterizing the free energy. We illustrate this method in the Hermitian, quartic matrix model, and we provide...
متن کاملResummation of Cactus Diagrams in Lattice QCD
We show how to perform a resummation, to all orders in perturbation theory, of a certain class of gauge invariant diagrams in Lattice QCD. These diagrams are often largely responsible for lattice artifacts. Our resummation leads to an improved perturbative expansion. Applied to a number of cases of interest, this expansion yields results remarkably close to corresponding nonperturbative estimates.
متن کاملAnalytic Resummation and Power Corrections for Dis and Drell–yan∗
Resummations of perturbation theory are a valuable tool in perturbative QCD, for theoretical as well as phenomenological applications. From a phenomenological point of view, resummations extend the applicability of perturbation theory to regions of phase space which are characterized by the presence of logarithms of large ratios of kinematical scales . From a theoretical point of view, resummat...
متن کاملAnalytic structure in the coupling constant plane in perturbative QCD
We investigate the analytic structure of the Borel-summed perturbative QCD amplitudes in the complex plane of the coupling constant. Using the method of inverse Mellin transform, we show that the prescription dependent Borel-Laplace integral can be cast, under some conditions, into the form of a dispersion relation in the a-plane. We also discuss some recent works relating resummation prescript...
